Holiday Activities

  • Hiking & Walking - There are 160 National Park in Queensland, most of which offer walks of varying degrees of difficulty.  see: www.australiannationalparks.com for details

  • Mountain Biking - There are trails in many locations including:

    • Bellenden Ker National Park

    • Brisbane National Park

    • Cairns

  • Sea life watching

    • The migration route for Humpback Whales from Antarctica takes them close to the Great Barrier Reef.  This is a good place to see them as well as in Tropical North Queensland and Southern Queensland in Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.

    • Hand feeding Dolphins from the beach in the wild is possible at Tin Can Bay and Moreton Island in southern Queensland.

    • North of Cairns, at Ribbon Reef, Minke Whales make an appearance between May and August.

    • Swimming with sharks (harmless ones) is possible at North Horn on Osprey reef, which due to favourable conditions, attracts large numbers of Tuna, Barracuda and several species of Shark.

    • Spawning coral is a sight to behold,  It happens over a few nights following the October or November full moon.  The sea turns pink as millions of tiny eggs are released simultaneously into the water.  This is a must for anyone who is in the area when this occurs and is a competent diver.

    • At night from October to March, the Queensland coast is the place to be for seeing the loggerhead, green, leatherback and flatback turtles nesting and the babies hatching.

  • Bungy Jumping - Tower bungy jumping takes place at Cairns where you can go individually or in Tandem.  Don't forget to sign the waiver form and make sure you life insurance is up to date! Only joking!!  Also try the Minjin Jungle Swing - don't ask.

  • Rafting - For the beginner or those with some sense of self preservation, the Barron Gorge National Park provides a good experience. However, for those who like a little more excitement try the North Johnstone or the Russell rivers. The Mighty Tully River is regarded as the best rafting river down under (and that includes NZ).

  • Kayaking - Sea kayaking is a great way to see the Whitsunday Islands, Hinchinbrook island, Goold island or the Family islands.  On the way you'll paddle past golden beaches, rainforest, granite cliffs and a wide variety of sea-life, flora and fauna.
River kayaking is available on several rivers including the Brisbane river, and in the Cooloola-Great Sandy NP the Upper Noosa river is also a great place to go.

  • Jet Boating -The adrenalin pumping excitement of fish tailing, sideways sliding, wake surfing and 360º spins is all part of the fun of jet boating available at the beautiful Gold Coast Broadwater which is located just north of Surfers Paradise.

  • Scuba Diving - Goes without saying, there's loads of it in and around the Great Barrier Reef.  Some places to base yourself are Cairns, Port Douglas, Mission Beach, Townsville, Thw Whitsunday islands, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Brisbane, Surfer's Paradise and The Sunshine coast.

  • Climbing - Queensland is not renowned for it's climbing opportunities, however, there are the "Scenic Rim" in south east Queensland, the Mount Stuart crag in far northern Queensland as well as crags at the Great Dividing Range that runs the entire length of the state.

  • Skiing - Queensland is not known for it's snow skiing but there are plenty of opportunities for taking part in jet or cable skiing.
