Cycling & Mountain Biking in New Zealand

There are literally hundreds of mountain bike tracks throughout New Zealand, over 400 at the last count, and that discounts road routes.  It's pointless to try and list them all, so those interested will need to visit other specialist sites in New Zealand to find out what part of New Zealand suits them best.  However, what we do know is that there are many tour companies that specialise in cycle tours of the country and that tours can be as long as 28 days or as short as one day.

New Zealand is a lovely country to see on a bike.  It's safer than almost anywhere else in the world, given that the people are friendly, crime is low,  and the roads, by British standards, are never crowded.  The South Island is perhaps slightly more popular for cyclists than the North Island with flat roads running along the valleys giving excellent views of the mountains. For the tougher individual, there are plenty of mountain tracks to negotiate.

A factor to bear in mind is that a cycling holiday in New Zealand really needs to be planned in some detail as accommodation can be scarce especially in the summer months.

One thing to bear in mind that the weather in New Zealand is as unpredictable as anywhere else.  Although it rains more in some parts of the country than others, wet weather gear is a must.  Don't forget that winter is New Zealand is from June to August, so it's best to avoid this period.
