East Cape |
| Geography: The East Cape (or East Coast or Eastland) region is located in the north east corner of the North Island. It is a sparsely inhabited and isolated region, with small coastal settlements dotted around small bays along the eastern shore. Inland, the land is rough, largely forested, hill country. Te Urewera NP is located in the west of the region, and the further west still is the Kaingaroa Forest. Located at northeast corner of the region, is the impressive bulk of the 1620 metre Mount Hikurangi. |

Attractions: The coast
here is popular for fishing, diving and boating and is the home to
numerous Crayfish. Beautiful beaches contrast dramatically with
rugged cliffs and rocky outcrops. Surfing is popular on the beaches north
of Gisborne, and the state forest parks of
Ruatoria, Raukumara, Urutawa
and Waioeka offer numerous walking tracks offering great views.
White water rafting is available on the Waioeke and
Motu rivers if the
visitor wants a change from simply relaxing. Gisborne is the only town of any size and its main purpose is to support the local industries of agriculture, horticulture, farming and forestry. The city is also renowned for the production of wine, notably Chardonnay. The town has its own botanical gardens and nearby are a number of arboreta at Ngatapa and Tiniroto. |
