Kayaking in New Zealand

There are two types of kayaking,  fresh water i.e. lakes or rivers, and sea water i.e. around the coasts.  Both of these kayaking variations are available throughout New Zealand although the majority of fresh water operators are located in the North Island with sea kayaking operators being equally spread over both Islands.

Perhaps the most famous stretch of water for fresh water kayaking in New Zealand is the Whanganui river where it is possible to kayak along it for up to 5 days.   However, there are many other rivers that provide multi-day trips including the Rangitaiki, Mohaka and Waikato Rivers in the North Island and the Dart, Clutha and Kawarau Rivers in the South Island.

Another, perhaps better place for the beginner to learn his/her kayaking is on one of the multitude of lakes throughout New Zealand.  Anyone interested in simply relaxing, bird watching, photography or, on Lake Taupo, studying Maori rock paintings, will find that this is the best way to do it.

A great way to see the great rivers and lakes of New Zealand!
