Manawatu-Wanganui

Geography:  The Manawatu-Wanganui Region is a large area located in the south part of the North Island. The region is dominated and defined by two significant river catchments, Whanganui and Manawatu. The Whanganui river is the longest navigable river in New Zealand.  The region's topography ranges from mountains such as Tararua and Ruahine Ranges, the Mt. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro volcanoes to the flat Manawatu Plains.

Attractions:  Lots of things to do related to mountains and rivers, including all types of such as jet boating, kayaking, canoeing, even steam boat tours.  Then there are trips by jet boat or canoe to the 'Bridge to Nowhere'.  The Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks offer guided walks along tracks such as the Mangapurua, Matemateonga and the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing tracks. 

Wanganui is located on the West Coast of  New Zealand’s North Island, It is a beautiful city having the Whanganui river running through it.  Wanganui is famous for its  heritage and the arts.   Amongst other things it has an observatory, a tram museum, an underground elevator to the top on observation tower, a maritime museum, parks and a river side market.
Palmerstone North is the main city in the region. The city's main streets are arranged in a grid around 'The Square', a seven hectare park of lawn, trees, lakes, fountains, and gardens in the centre of the city.  The city is home to the Massey University and has a number of interesting parks.
