Marlborough

Geography: The south and west of the area is largely mountainous.  To the South of the region, are the Kaikoura Ranges, the northern most peaks of the Southern Alps.  The East of the area comprises wide plains and the outflow of the Wairau River just North of Blenheim.  The North coast, where the drowned valleys of Marlborough Sounds can be found, is an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Attractions:  Famous for its Sauvignon Blanc (arguably, the best in the world), most of the vineyards are centred around the towns of  Renwick, Blenheim and Cloudy Bay in the North and the Wairau and Awatere river valleys in the South.  After Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay in the second most popular grape amongst the vineyards, followed by Pinot Noir and Riesling.  The area also has a growing range of sparkling and both white and red table wines.

Picton, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound,  is the principal town in the North, this being the main transport link between the North and South Island of New Zealand.

Blenheim, situated on the Wairu Plain, is a town to stay in if the visitor is interested in wine, boats, fishing, swimming with Dolphins, Whale watching, walking in bush or coastal areas, or simply relaxing in the sunniest climate in New Zealand.
