Northern Territory

Geography:  The vast majority of the land area of NT is taken up with outback, so a large percentage of the population is centred on the state capital, Darwin.  The Northern Territory is perhaps most famous for the spectacular Uluru (Ayres Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas).  These are natural sandstone rock formations jutting out from the surrounding bush and have immense scared meaning amongst the Aboriginal people. The Uluru national park has many natural springs, waterholes, and rock caves containing aboriginal paintings.

Attractions:  The national parks of Uluru - Kata Tjuta and Kakadu attract many visitors for their diverse and at times spectacular scenery and features.  However, there are many other reserves, national parks and coastal features to explore.

Darwin has extensive parks and gardens. These include the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, East Point Reserve, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, Charles Darwin National Park, Knuckey Lagoons Conservation Reserve, Leanyer Recreation Park, the Nightcliff Foreshore, Bicentennial Park and the Jingili Water Gardens.
Both fresh-water and sea fishing are popular pastimes amongst both the local people and visitors.  A particular draw is the barramundi fish which is famed for it's fighting capability.  Many other fish are available for catching including Spanish mackerel, jewfish, queenfish and snapper in deeper waters just a short trip away from Darwin.
