Queensland

Geography:  Queensland has a coastline of 2250 miles.  Off the coast and running parallel to the land is the great Barrier Reef composed of coral, which forms a natural breakwater, enclosing a lagoon-like belt of calm water.  There are gaps in the reef caused by the outflow of the Brisbane, Burnett, Fitzroy and Burdekin rivers amongst others, flowing to the pacific.  The Great Dividing Range plateau runs North to South at a distance of from 20 to 100 miles from the coast.

Attractions:  The Great Barrier Reef is the obvious target for scuba divers and snorkellers with some amazing fish, coral formations and sea creatures to observe.

The coastline is one gigantic playground and with mean annual temperatures ranging from a minimum 14º in Brisbane to a maximum 31º in Longreach it's not surprising that vast numbers of visitors head for the Queensland beaches.

The Gold Coast is known by Aussies as the "Theme Park Capital" with no less than five major theme parks being located here.   Other major attraction are the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Australia Zoo (home of the late Steve Irwin).

Throughout Queensland there are national parks with walks through forests and bush alive with wild life and the sounds of many species of bird.
