Skiing in New Zealand

In the North Island there are two major ski fields (Turoa and Whakapapa) on Mount Ruapehu, an active volcanic cone.

The Southern Alps offer a wide range of resorts for skiing and boarding. Here there are a variety of pistes offering all levels of difficulty and running through magnificent alpine scenery. The resort towns and lodges all become alive with aprés ski revellers in the evenings following a days skiing on the Piste.   There are plenty of ski lifts and, for the more adventurous skier there are opportunities for taking a Heli Ski (or Heli Board)  trip from the Wanaka and Queenstown area to the virtually untouched deep snow of the Southern Alps.
