Taranaki

Geography:  Taranaki is located on the west coast of the North Island, surrounding the volcanic peak of the same name. The large bays north-west and south-west of Cape Egmont are known as North and South Taranaki Bight. The region is exceptionally fertile, thanks to generous rainfall and the rich volcanic soil. n the Southern Hemisphere.

Attractions:  The region has an many rivers, sea, surf beaches and bush walks, all the attractions for which New Zealand is justly famous.  The surfing is, arguably, the best that New Zealand has to offer.  There are numerous walks and short treks close three main starting points at North Egmont, Stratford Mountain House and Dawson Falls.  There are many water sports available in the area including: Sea Kayaking, Jet Skiing, water Skiing, Yachting, wind surfing and fishing. Plus a local pastime called Dam Dropping (see pic).

New Plymouth, located on the northern coast is the principal town and is noted for its botanic gardens, particularly, Pukekura park which hosts a major annual music festival.
Stratford is a convenient place to stay to visit both the Egmont and Wanganui National Parks.  Located in the centre of Taranaki. the town has a temperate climate, cold in winter, with snow on the mountain close by, yet warm if the days are sunny.
