Tasman

Geography:  The Tasman region covers 9,768 square kilometres of land on the north western side of the South Island.  The northern part of the region borders the Tasman sea and is famed for it's sandy beaches, Farewell Spit being 40 km long.  The area is also popular with fishermen who get good sport from the rivers as well as the sea.  To the east there are the mountain ranges of Spencer, Saint Arnaud, Richmond and to the south the Victoria Ranges.  The whole area is dotted with lush bush which supports abundant birdlife.

Kayaking at Abel Tasman

Attractions:  .There are three National Parks in the region viz: Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi which provide walkers and hikers with magnificent tracks.  If your legs aren't so good why not take a 4WD safari along Farewell Spit where you can go to the lighthouse and various bird spotting points.  There are numerous activities in the area including sea fishing, all kinds of cruises, cycling (inc. trikes), 4WD tours, hiking, caving, sea kayaking, horse-riding and much more.

Nelson, on the southern boundary of the region is the largest town.  Nelson has four main industries associated with it namely, seafood production, horticulture (aided by the Mediterranean style climate), tourism (a great starting off point for exploring the region) and forestry.  There is much to see and do in Nelson including visiting the new museum, the Whakatu Marea (Maori centre), the Saturday morning market and the town's aquarium.
