Wellington

Geography:  The region of Wellington is a provincial district in the North Island of New Zealand being bounded on the west and south by the Tasman Sea and Cook Strait.  The area is largely mountainous with a fertile coastal strip.  Wellington city is the principal port and capital city of New Zealand.  On a clear day it is possible to see the distant snow capped mountain range of the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island.

Attractions:  Being a large city, Wellington has something for everyone from walking in the local parks to adventure activities such as gliding, yachting, ballooning, bungy jumping, simulated jet airliner flying and much more.  There are many good restaurants of various cuisines that reflect the cosmopolitan nature of the city.

The waterfront area of the city offers a variety of activities including sea kayaking, cycling, shopping, visiting art galleries, walking and boat tours.  A highlight of the year is the Dragon Boat festival when up to 40,000 people pack the waterfront to see the boats racing around the harbour and shop at market and food stalls.  There are also crafts, jewellery, face painting, Chinese lion dancers, jugglers and much more.

The Inter-Islander ferry leaves Wellington harbour several times daily for the trip to Picton on the South Island. There are great views of the surrounding hills and the shimmering harbour as you leave the city.
